Crime Writer’s Workshop at ANU Canberra, with Sulari Gentill
27 Jun 2021
Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a fabulous ACT Writers workshop with a bunch of other engaging and interested crime writers from around the Canberra region. We were so lucky to learn from the lovely and widely published, Sulari Gentill. Having read a few of Sulari’s Rowland Sinclair series (historical crime fiction set during the 1930s, mostly in Sydney and wider NSW), I was excited to learn how to approach not only crime writing, but some aspects of historical crime fiction which set it apart.
Topics discussed included plotting, character development, pace, and genre, including the subgenres of crime such as amateur, thriller, historical etc.
It was a very worthwhile workshop and a very enjoyable day. Also the first workshop I have ever attended which took place inside a bookshop (at Harry Harthog on the ANU campus). A very literary experience!
‘The Ink Stain’ wins the HNSA Short Story Contest!
October 2019
So grateful (and a little bit chuffed) that my short story entitled ‘The Ink Stain’ has won the Historical Novel Society of Australasia’s biennial short story contest.
The story is set in 1827 in colonial Parramatta, primarily taking place in and around the Female Factory (aka prison). The protagonist is a female convict and the plot explores her experience (as well as the broader experiences of female convicts in general) during the October riot at the prison.
